How to Install Your Peel and Stick Wallpaper
Whether you’re refreshing a full room or adding a creative accent wall, follow the steps below to prep, apply, and enjoy your new wallpaper: no mess and no paste required.
Let’s Get Started: Preparing for a Smooth Install
Before you dive in, unroll your wallpaper and take a good look at each printed panel. Our team does individually check each order as it's printed in South Carolina, but it’s always a good idea to double-check for any issues before you begin.
P.S. Have questions about your order? Email us anytime at support@springscreative.com!
Take a moment to measure your wall and compare it to the number of rolls you’ve ordered. Be sure to account for pattern repeat when confirming your wall coverage, as some designs have larger repeat sizes than others.
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Sharp utility knife (like a break-away knife or razor blade)
- Straight edge
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Plastic felt-line squeegee or smoother
- Ladder
- Clean work surface or table
Be sure to read through the instructions below before your first panel goes up. We promise it’ll save time in the long run!
Prep Your Wall Like a Pro
Great results start with a clean, smooth surface.
- Fill in any holes and sand down rough spots.
- Wipe away dust, dirt, grease, or any old paint or wallpaper residue.
- Avoid applying wallpaper to porous or textured surfaces like cement block, fresh paint (wait at least 4 weeks), or walls coated with washable/no-VOC paint.
- For glossy finishes, give your wall a light sanding and wipe it clean to help ensure a good stick.
- Remove any outlet covers so you can get a seamless look.
Want to be extra safe? Purchase a sample size first to make sure the design is right for your space and your wallpaper adheres well to the wall.
Plan Your First Panel
Measure the height of your wall and add 4 inches for wiggle room. Cut your first panel to this length.
Pick a discreet place to start (corners or behind doors are great options!) to help hide seams.
Use a level and straight edge to draw a light vertical plumb line at your starting point. This will help keep everything straight and steady.
Time to Apply Your Wallpaper!
-
Peel back about 6 inches of the backing paper and crease it flat.
-
Line up the top of your panel, leaving about 2 inches of height above your starting point for trimming and installation ease.
-
Lightly press just a few inches of the panel to the wall, aligning it with your plumb line. Smooth from the center outward using your hands or a squeegee.
- Continue peeling the backing down and smoothing as you go, working top to bottom.
- TIP: Use gentle, even pressure to avoid stretching your wallpaper. If it’s a little off, no worries, just peel it back gently and reapply.
- Smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles with your squeegee, always working from the center outward.
-
Measure and cut your next panel, aligning the pattern carefully.
-
Slightly overlap the new panel over the previous one, lining up the pattern from top to bottom. Reposition as needed while smoothing from the center outward.
-
Continue panel by panel across the wall, either left to right or right to left. Just keep it consistent.
- Use your utility knife to trim the top and bottoms of each panel. Press the cut edges flat for a clean finish. For tricky spots around windows, doors, or outlets, use careful diagonal cuts and trim all at once at the end, or as you go.
You’ve got this! Once you’re finished, step back and enjoy your room transformation.
