“Sewing rooms with sewing machines to rent by the hour are the fastest growing new retail hang-out for the Brits with a hankering to sew! People are having to sign up and wait in line, and fabric sales are climbing!” This was the word out and about on the show floor of the Craft Hobby Association’s (CHA) Annual Event in Anaheim, California – January 26, 2009.
What’s happening here in America? Data from a most recent study from CHA supports an increase in sewing by American Consumers and especially in a new category called “craft sewing.” What’s a craft sewer? Is that person different from the sewer who was taught the basics in the public schools? Hard to find a public school today that teaches basic sewing classes. And, those of us lucky enough to have taken sewing classes back then, just had to have a big-time sewing machine that cost into the hundreds of dollars.
Today, the best place to look for sewing classes is at your local community college or fabric or craft retailer. Patterns and instructions are now simplified, and after a basic sewing class even a simple quilt is easy to make, plus garments for you and your family. Home decorating ideas are abundant and just sewing straight is what is required to whip up curtains and tablecloths!
Best of all and what a nice surprise, you can find a basic “craft” sewing machine for under $99, and at some retail outlets $59! In Consumer Products Guide they have reviewed sewing machines that are available at retail.
We at Springs Creative’s Craft Division own a few of these new “craft” sewing machines and actually our most recent purchase fits nicely into a briefcase on wheels, with a place for the notions as well. We gave this new “Craft Sewing Machine” a test, and in less than five hours, made a Christening Gown of our batiste (cotton blend), a lined silk jacket and bonnet trimmed with lace.
The thread nor the needle did not break once, and it was easy to hold the seams traight with the built in guides on machine platform. Plus, the seam finishing was simple and easy to accomplish, by simply turning the dial just to right width! It’s a new day for sewing! Welcome to all the crafters who now form this new consumer group! Welcome to the wonderful world of sewing and creativity – which is our specialty at the Springs Creative Craft Division.
