“Miss Springmaid” documentary aires on SCETV
November 29, 2010
How do you make advertising for sheets interesting? Or even incorporate the “sex sells” mindset into sheets advertising? Colonel Elliott White Springs, a marketing genius ahead of his time, was able to do just that! With provocative, racy images featuring “Spring Maids,” Springs launched advertising campaigns that raised eyebrows. A contest held to choose “Miss Springmaid” was held each year with the winner receiving a trip to New York and a shopping trip to Tiffany. Too bad we don’t still have that contest today! The documentary featured several university professors who use the campaigns in their classrooms as well as local historians and Anne Springs Close, The Colonel’s daughter. The Colonel was an ancestor of the founders of Springs Industries and the grandfather of the owner of Springs Creative, Derick Close.
In case you missed it, we’ll let you know if the documentary is set to air again. You won’t want to miss it a second time!
The SCETV Web site has more about The Colonel and the early Springs advertising if you are interested!
