Celebrate National Craft Month – Check out Kate’s sewing space!
March 11, 2011
My favorite part is my sewing wall. This was an easy and cheap Saturday project. Using an old scrap of wood, and some leftover paint, I created a board for hanging all of my tools and notions I use for sewing. It’s great having it in sight, and organized. The spool rack is made of nail tacks with fat heads to catch the thread. The baskets came in a 4 pack from the dollar store, and are mounted using the command sticky hooks. I also used Velcro strips to mount my bobbin box and pin cushion. All the other tools are hung with strategically placed nails. Under my sewing table (which was going to be thrown out by my parents!) is a small shelf with clear plastic drawers where I keep all my patterns, extra supplies (elastic, fabric markers, etc.). The second table in the picture – well that was Katie’s sewing table before she moved to Australia… I use it mostly for cutting now! Goodwill and other community thrift stores are great places to find furniture at an inexpensive price – The cabinet I have for all my fabric was salvaged from the local mall dumpster – a Victoria’s Secret outcast from many many years ago! Each drawer has a different category of fabric – one for solids and linings, one for prints, one for interfacing, and one for patterns and pieces I use on a regular basis. The bottom sections are piled high with fabric scraps – as you can see! I added a throw rug for color, and to catch all the thread and fabric bits to make clean up easier. I also ‘recycled’ some old small trash cans as storage bins for the bolts of fabric I have in the basement. As you can see, with a little creativity and organization you can turn even the drabbest space into something functional and fun for your hobby!
