April Johnston’s Take on Summer Fashion

April Johnston’s Take on Summer Fashion

I am hoping you all had a great fourth of July weekend with family and friends!  I know I did!  I came home to Mooresville, NC to spend some time with family for the long holiday weekend.  Being on Lake Norman was a refreshing change to Tybee beach in Savannah where I usually go to cool off from the southern heat!  It was nice to be able to have some glassy water to slalom ski and wakeboard on.  I have been adjusting my wardrobe to be more compatible with this heat and humidity circulating the south.  My headbands have gotten thicker and have a turban style knot in the center of the forehead.  These fun headbands can help with adding a cute bit of accessory to the normal top knot bun and also act as a sweat absorber wink.  I have chosen to make or buy tops for my wardrobe that are lightweight and flowy so that they are less restricting and breathe more. Using fabrics like Chiffon, habotai, georgette and crepe you can create this soft ethereal look and also be comfortable.  I have chosen to step back in the 80’s and pull jean short references with high waist details and extended back pockets.  References in which are actual photos of my own mother rocking this look with a homemade crop trapeze tank top, what a hoot!  The bucket waistline on shorts and ankle hem capris are really fun for tucking a great printed oversized tank top into!  Just because its summer doesn’t mean you have to be shy about wearing your heeled ankle boots.  Introduce them with your bucket shorts or a cute knee length summer dress, I love this look and it adds a bit of edge to the normal summer dress.  I highly suggest introducing some pastel neon mixtures of color into your wardrobe too!  I am really loving this bright salmon neon pink peach color found in dresses or tops that have color blocking of white and brown around it to really make the pink pop!  Doing something spontaneous like this with color in your wardrobe will add a bit of fun for you for all different occasions and outfits. Make sure that you make all these options your own and introduce them when and where you feel comfortable, but don’t be shy to step out of the box and make a statement.
