A Little Holiday Humor!
November 23, 2011
A snap in the air, a warm cozy feeling, a time when friendships and family draw near to each other. This can only mean that the holidays are upon us. We look for those traditions every year of our lives for it is the time we set aside from our hectic schedules to recognize that it is the time of giving and sharing our love for each other and reaching out to those in need. It is what brings out the best in mankind and inspires us to be all that we can and should be. It is a time to reflect on the things we did right and the things we could do better, but most importantly it is all about love for ourselves , for others, for the land that we live in and our abounding generosity. Yes we should strive for this ideal each and every day, but that is what makes the holidays so special, because it separates us from the routines in life and gives us an opportunity to take a moment to remember the importance of family, of reaching out to others and giving of one’s self. It is what is good in all of us.
Lighten up already! Yes, the sentiment is there and should be, but this is a time to be merry. You quilters know what I am talking about.
You get together with your favorite treasured swatches and patch them together into an heirloom quilt filled with family filled memories,
while you talk about what Uncle Fred did on the last Holiday when he put a little too much spike in the favorite punch. Or maybe it was Aunt Betsy who said a little too much about Aunt Louise who in turn said too much about Aunt Betsy. I would like to think that every family has an Aunt Betsy and Aunt Louise. I would like to talk about my Uncle Dave and his escapades, but that would change the whole meaning of the Holidays. Anyway , getting back on track, wouldn’t it be nice to stitch onto a crazy patch what your family or friends mean to you and share those memories with each other. Traditional, who says. Have fun with your creativity. Take a chance. Insert a photo into your quilt that shows exactly what Uncle Fred did. Just don’t admit that you were the one that did it. Make it festive with glitter, with gold, with ribbon and bows, with trinkets and splinkets and treasures aglow. With all the holiday patterns there are to choose from, there is something that will spark a memory that shares your love or laughter and brings you a little closer each and every year. A quilt is a perfect way to share those joyous moments, but don’t let it stop there. Think about making it a quilt tradition when you gather together, by adding on just a little more spice, adventure , love or memory to an already perfect quilt. If it is your family, let the kids have a part in it where they can express their joy. If it is a friend, ask them to share something personal to add to your quilt that bonds your love together. Through the years it will add so much more to the experience. After all we have a lot to think about and be thankful for. So why not express it by making something that is memorable so we can remind ourselves why we draw ourselves together in these special holiday moments in the first place. Maybe we will realize in the process that it is these moments that need to be shared throughout the year as well as the years to come.
Love , peace and happy sewing
