Thread the Needle Day!
July 25, 2011
Monday, July 25 is Thread the Needle Day! What a great day to learn about the different stitches that your machine can sew! Amy, one of our expert seamstresses, recently did an experiment with her machine and its different stitching capabilities:
While cleaning out my sewing room I found a two yard piece of white double faced quilt fabric. I also found a box full of partial spools of thread that I bought at a yard sale. I started thinking what could I do with the treasures that I had found. Then I thought about my sewing machine that had all those wonderful stitches that I had never used.
I started sewing on the curved quilting lines of the double faced fabric. I sewed from top to bottom of the lines using one of the decorative stitched and one of the colors of thread in the box. I couldn’t stop!! For the next line I changed to a different color of thread and the next decorative stitch on my machine. As I followed the quilting lines, the curves would overlap and make a different design. I did this until the whole piece of fabric was covered with all the decorative stitches on my machine and using all the colors of thread that I had in the box. The piece turned out to be very attractive, so I put a binding around the edge and called it a “Quilted Throw”.
How many stitching options does your sewing machine have? How many of them have you actually used? Next time you have a few minutes before you begin a new project, go through the different stitch options on your machine and try them out. Maybe you’ll find a new favorite! Or maybe, like me, you’ll have a new throw to enjoy!
