2011 Spring and Summer Trends According to April Johnston
May 25, 2011
This summer the trends are out and we’re finding out it’s all about how much fun you can have with a pastel, feminine palate. With variations of laces, watercolor florals, and ikat effects you can create something edgy and feminine by incorporating and mixing these different textures and prints. I am loving the rich cobalt blue that is enhancing the runways paired with the softest of pinks. Not only can we see this Marie Antoinette effect in ready to wear but it tends to roll over into evening wear as well. Rich emerald green mixed in with washed out cream tones creates a bold but soft look for a special occasion piece. Of all the trends this summer I adore the watercolor brushstroke prints! These prints added with a lace make a fantasy quality to a fun flowy summer dress! So don’t stop with just one print! Grab a micro print and pair it with an oversized watercolor baroque style print and add in some lace, with this you will be ready for the Paris runway!
Another great place to look for inspiration is Alexander McQueen’s “Savage Beauty” exhibition that is going on right now at the Met Museum in New York City. He was an expert at creating dark romanticism in his creations and will always be my favorite designer. Look to his work for his gentle juxtaposition of lace and prints within a garment, he was a master of this.
